A major Riyadh hospital group operating seven hospitals and 45 clinics across the Kingdom was rapidly adopting AI for diagnostic imaging, patient analytics, and clinical decision support. While these AI systems promised improved outcomes and operational efficiency, the organization faced mounting compliance pressure from multiple regulators: SFDA (Saudi Food and Drug Authority) for AI medical device approvals, NHIC (National Health Information Center) for health IT standards, PDPA (Personal Data Protection Authority) for patient data privacy, and MOH (Ministry of Health) for clinical governance.
The immediate challenge was that three AI diagnostic systems deployed in radiology and pathology were operating without proper SFDA medical device classification or approval, exposing the organization to potential regulatory action. Solution
The engagement delivered a comprehensive healthcare AI governance and compliance framework spanning 16 weeks, designed specifically for Saudi Arabia's multi-regulator environment.
Phase 1 was a multi-regulator compliance assessment. We mapped all 12 AI systems in use against SFDA medical device regulations, NHIC health IT standards, PDPA data protection requirements, and MOH clinical governance guidelines.
